Who are we?

The Munich Monks are the rugby division of Team München e.V. and were founded in 2016. The approximately 70 players (2025) consist of men* and women* from all over the world, mixed from rugby beginners to experienced players. We stand for LGBTQ+ inclusivity and offer a safe space for all genders and sexual orientations.

Do you take part in tournaments?

Yes, we do!

The Munich Monks currently play in the Bavarian Association League (BRV) and take part in various national and international tournaments organised by our umbrella association International Gay Rugby (IGR) every year.

By the way: one of our great successes in 2023 was winning the Challenger Cup at the IGR Union Cup 2023 in Birmingham, England, where all European rugby teams of the IGR federation were invited. In May 2025, we will be back at the IGR Union Cup in Oslo to defend our title.

However, participation in league sport is not absolutely necessary to join us. You are also welcome to gain your first rugby tournament experience by playing friendly matches against other IGR clubs (e.g. Vienna, Cologne, Berlin).

In the 2025/2026 season, we will be playing in the Bavarian Regional League.

Why do we need an LGBTQ+ inclusive rugby team?

As the only LGBTQ+ inclusive team in southern Germany and only one of three LGBTQ inclusive teams in Germany (alongside the Berlin Bruisers and the Cologne Crushers), we ensure a safe environment for LGBTQ+ in the sporting environment. Unfortunately, members of the LGBTQ+ community still face discrimination, stigma and (open) hatred in sport.

Such teams not only serve to practise sport, but also stand for strengthening the queer community and also as a contact point, especially for young LGBTQ+ people who are afraid or shy of coming out within a sports team and whose sporting environment may not accept their identity.

Of course, it's also a great opportunity to meet new people outside of the celebrations.

Who is our team aimed at?

Firstly to all women*, men*, non-binary and trans* people who enjoy sport and rugby. But above all to all people who are committed to the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in sport, regardless of whether they are LGBTQ+ or not. If you identify with these goals, just get involved and join our team!

Do I need rugby experience?

No, you don't need experience to be a player for our team. We accept players of all levels and offer opportunities to develop your skills and grow as a player.

The sport of rugby includes different positions for all different physical statures. Whether strong forwards or nimble backs, everyone finds a place in the rugby team, because Rugby is suitable for every body.

As we have members from all over the world, our training sessions are held in German and English.

Is there an age limit?

In principle, we would like to play with players of all ages. However, players under the age of 18 require parental or guardian consent.

How can I get involved with the Munich Monks?

There are many ways to get involved with us! Whether as a player, supporter or volunteer! Just get in touch with us so that we can find the right role for you!

What makes Munich Monks unique?

The Munich Monks see themselves as more than just a rugby team. Away from the pitch, we organise many internal or public social events throughout the year (e.g. Christopher Street Day/Pride and St. Patrick's Day), as well as our own birthday and Christmas parties, a joint visit to the Oktoberfest or we meet up in a Munich bar to watch rugby matches together.

What do I need to bring for the first training session?

For the first rugby training, please bring:

Sportswear: comfortable, flexible sportswear
Rugby boots : studs for good grip. Of course you can also bring your own football boots if you have them.
Mouthguard: very important for injury prevention (optional for the first training session)
Water bottle: important because we train outside!
Towel
Change of clothes

And most importantly: positive attitude, ready to tackle and scrum and have fun!
